A fair test takes a minute of setup. Here is how to run one, what the numbers mean, and when it is worth a call to us.
The button below opens Speedtest by Ookla in a new tab. It is a third-party site, not part of webperception.com, and the result reflects conditions at the moment you run it. Works with any internet provider.
Before you click, run through the four steps below so the result reflects your connection and not your WiFi.
Four steps that keep the result honest
Connect a computer to the router with an Ethernet cable. A wired test measures the connection. A WiFi test measures the connection and your WiFi together.
Stop downloads, streams, backups, and game updates on every device for a minute. Anything else using the connection lowers the number you see.
One test is a snapshot. Run it a few times and at different times of day. A result that stays steady tells you more than a single high or low number.
Write down the device, whether it was wired or on WiFi, and the time. If you call us, that context helps us find the cause faster.
How quickly data comes from the internet to you. Streaming, browsing, and pulling down files depend on it.
How quickly data goes from you to the internet. Video calls, sending files, and cloud backups depend on it.
How long a round trip takes. Lower is better. It matters for video calls and gaming, where waiting shows up as lag.
How much the ping varies from moment to moment. Lower jitter means a more even experience on calls and live video.
Not a single one. A good result is one that is steady from test to test and lines up with what your agreement says.
A wired test that is close to that, and stays close at different times of day, means the connection is doing its job. A WiFi result will usually come in lower than a wired one, and that is normal.
If you are a WebPerception customer and the numbers do not line up, we would rather hear about it than have you wonder.
Most slow-internet complaints turn out to be one or the other. Knowing which saves everyone time.
A signal travels from one of our tower sites to a small outdoor antenna at your property, then over an Ethernet cable to your router. This is the part WebPerception delivers, and it is where our 99.9% uptime guarantee is measured: at the rooftop antenna.
A wired test at the router is the closest you can get to measuring this part on its own.
WiFi is the indoor system that carries the connection to your devices without wires. Walls, distance, building materials, older devices, how many things are connected, and nearby networks all affect it.
If a wired test is fine and WiFi is slow, the fix is inside the building, not on the tower. We help with WiFi too, including when your internet comes from another provider. See our WiFi and networking services.
