How to open a port on your router for a game server, a camera recorder, or remote access, and the one thing to check with us before you start.
Port forwarding tells your router to send traffic that arrives on a specific port to one device inside your network. Most people never need it. If you do, here is how it works, and what to know about it on a fixed wireless connection.
Whether a service is reachable from outside depends on how the address is assigned to your connection. Some connections have an address that is reachable from the internet; others share one. If a rule that looks right does not work, call us and we will check how your connection is set up.
Business customers can ask about a static IP address as part of their agreement.

Some recorders need a port opened to view footage from outside. Many use an app relay instead and need nothing.

Five steps on the router. The exact menu names depend on your router model; the label shows where to sign in.
In the router's device list, or in the device's own network settings. It looks like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
Give the device a DHCP reservation (sometimes called address reservation) so its local IP never changes. Otherwise the rule breaks after a restart.
The app, game, or camera documentation lists the port number and whether it is TCP, UDP, or both.
In the port forwarding section (some routers call it virtual server or NAT), enter the external port, the device's local IP, the internal port, and the protocol. Save.
Use a phone on cellular data, not your WiFi. If it fails, re-check the rule and the device's own firewall, then call us and we will check how your connection is set up.

It is safe when you open only what you need, keep the device and router firmware current, and use strong passwords on anything reachable from outside. When the app or device offers its own remote access or a VPN, that is usually the better choice.
Port forwarding opens one door to one device. A VPN lets you join your home or business network from outside as if you were there, with everything behind it staying closed. For remote access to more than one thing, ask us about a VPN.
